The History of ETA

One of the most significant watch manufacturers in the world, ETA is a Swiss manufacturer that has always pushed the boundaries of watchmaking. In 1793, Isaac and David Benguerel founded their workshop in Switzerland under the name Fabriques d’Horlogerie de Fontainemelon. Taking advantage of industrial techniques to assist in the manufacturing of their watch parts, FHF expanded their workshop into a factory in 1856 when it officially became a company. The company became a pioneer in mass production and their company was a major game player in the growth of the Swiss watch industry.

Over the years, FHF began to merge with other companies and in 1932, the FHF consolidated multiple Swiss movement makers to form ETA. By bringing the expertise and insights of multiple watchmakers together, ETA became leaders in developing mechanical movements. Their biggest success was the ETA 2892, instrumental in saving the mechanical watch industry during the quartz crisis. ETA became known for producing reliable, cost-effective mechanical movements, including automatic calibers that powered a vast range of Swiss brands. In 1983, ETA was integrated into the Swatch Group, a leading global watchmaking company. This allowed ETA to become the dominant supplier of watch movements with the ETA 2892 becoming an industry standard. Today, ETA continues to be a leader in Swiss watchmaking, contributing significantly to the global reputation of Swiss watches and producing movements for many luxury and mid-range brands.

The Quartz Crisis

The Quartz Crisis is a period of watchmaking history that stands out above all others with the crisis between the 1970s and 1980s radically transforming the global watchmaking industry. The introduction of affordable and highly accurate quartz watches from Japan posed a significant threat to traditional Swiss mechanical watchmakers and caused a huge disruption in the industry.

The origins of quartz technology can be traced back to 1927 when Warren Marrison and J.W. Horton developed the first quartz clock in the United States. However, it was not until the late 1960s that the quartz revolution gained traction. In 1969, Seiko, a Japanese watchmaker, launched the Seiko Astron, the world’s first quartz wristwatch. The quartz movement, powered by a battery and regulated by a quartz crystal oscillator, offered unrivaled accuracy at a fraction of the cost of mechanical watches. In contrast, traditional Swiss mechanical watches typically had an error margin of seconds per day while quartz watches were accurate to within seconds per month.

The affordability, durability and precision of quartz watches made them appealing to consumers and this led to a sharp decline in demand for mechanical watches. Swiss watchmakers who had dominated the industry for centuries were slow to adapt. The traditionalists in watchmaking dramatically underestimated the appeal of quartz technology, leading to a massive industry shake-up. Between 1970 and 1983, the number of Swiss watchmakers plummeted from 1,600 to just 600 with tens of thousands of jobs lost. Swiss watch exports fell drastically and the entire industry faced potential collapse.

The crisis forced Swiss watchmakers to innovate and one of the biggest groups to revitalize the Swiss watch industry was The Swatch Group. During this time, The Swatch Group acquired ETA, the producer of the ETA 2892. With this movement of excellence at their disposal, Swatch could produce affordable timepieces without compromising on quality and accuracy. While Swatch focused on creating affordable and quirky timepieces, other Swiss watchmakers began focusing on luxury mechanical timepieces, marketing them as status symbols rather than just functional tools.

It is certain that the Quartz Crisis left a lasting impact on the industry but while it temporarily dethroned Swiss watchmaking from global dominance, it inspired innovation and specialization across the entire industry. Today, quartz watches remain a dominant force in the global market but mechanical watches have regained prestige with the Swatch Group and ETA playing a major role in keeping Swiss watchmaking alive. The crisis highlighted the need for adaptability in a rapidly changing market and reshaped the watch industry for generations to come.

The Development of the ETA 2892

The ETA 2892 is one of the most significant and widely used automatic movements in modern watchmaking. Developed by ETA, the 2892 has earned a well-deserved reputation for reliability, precision and versatility. It is one of the most dominant movements used in the watchmaking industry and a favorite of both luxury and mid-range watch brands.

In response to the Quartz Crisis, ETA began to focus on creating versatile and efficient mechanical movements that could be used across a wide variety of watches. With the entire mechanical watch industry in jeopardy, the efforts of ETA were part of a broader industry effort to maintain mechanical watchmaking in the face of competition from quartz technology.

The ETA 2892 was the creation of Anton Bally, the President of ETA. Bally is a major name in the watchmaking industry, an engineer and designer coming from a 200-year lineage in watchmaking. After beginning his career as an apprentice at ETA in 1962, Bally received an outstanding technical education before returning to the company and climbing the ranks.

The ETA 2892 evolved from earlier ETA calibers like the 2824 and 2890. It is regularly referred to as a more accurate version of the 2824 but this movement is so much more than that. With a smaller balance wheel, a clockwise balance cock and a 42-hour power reserve, this impressive movement was introduced as a thinner, more refined automatic movement. Measuring just 3.6mm in thickness, it was notably slimmer when compared to many other automatic movements. This made the movement especially suitable for use in elegant dress watches and luxury timepieces that required a refined profile without compromising performance. With many watch manufacturers focusing on developing timepieces of style and luxury, the ETA 2892 was the perfect fit. It was often used as a base movement that could be adapted with additional complications such as a chronograph, GMT function or a power reserve indicator. Many luxury brands, including Omega, Tudor, IWC and Breitling, used the 2892 as a base for their in-house modified movements, continuing to do so with the 2892’s successor.

At the time, the ETA 2892 was a remarkable achievement and has won numerous awards. The ETA 2892 was produced from 1975 to 1983 when it was replaced by an upgraded version, an even smaller caliber known as the ETA 2892-2. It survived extremely well through the Quartz Crisis but watchmaking in the 1980s called for even smaller movements to be developed. The ETA 2892-2 has a 25.6mm diameter in contrast to the 2892’s 28mm. The 2892-2 remained in production until 2000, four years after the 2892-A2 was introduced. The ETA 2892-A2 was launched without retiring the 2892-2 after ETA decided that the two could co-exist. The ETA 2892-A2 had superior winding efficiency and established itself as the dominant of the two. Today, it is the ETA 2892-A2 that powers modern timepieces that enter the market. However, in 2021, ETA stopped supplying the movement to companies outside of The Swatch Group. Each iteration and evolution of the ETA 2892 has only received subtle changes to ensure that the quality and functionality of the movement remain the same. Both the 2892-2 and 2892-A2 are simple improvements on an iconic movement.

The ETA 2892 and its successors have stood the test of time. Evolving through several versions, the movement has remained dominant in the industry. Its thin profile, durability and ability to accommodate complications have helped it become one of the most popular movements in watchmaking. The movement played a crucial role in the survival and resurgence of mechanical watchmaking while continuing to provide a blend of classic watchmaking craftsmanship with the precision required for modern timekeeping and mechanics.
