Internal Parts of a Watch

Balance Spring
The balance spring, also known as the hairspring, is a delicate, coiled spring attached to the balance wheel. It controls the oscillations of the balance wheel, regulating the watch’s timekeeping by keeping consistent beats.

Functioning as the heart of a mechanical watch, the balance wheel works with the balance spring, oscillating back and forth to divide time into equal intervals.
Bridge

Complications

There are a wide variety of complications that you can find on a watch, such as a chronograph, a complication that functions as a stopwatch. Other watch complications include moon phases, minute repeaters, and perpetual calendars.
Date Window
The date window is an aperture on the dial that displays the current date. As a traditional rule of thumb, it is positioned at 3 o’clock or 6 o’clock, but it can be found anywhere on the watch face.

Dial
Also known as the watch face, the dial of a watch is the part that immediately grabs your attention. The focal point of a timepieces’ design and functionality, the dial is a prominent part of a watch’s aesthetic appeal. Dials come in various styles from minimalistic to highly decorative featuring a wide variety of materials that can increase the value of the timepiece. However, the dial’s function goes beyond its aesthetic appeal and provides the key function of a watch – the ability to tell time. Escapement
The escapement is part of a mechanical watch that transfers energy from the mainspring to the balance wheel in controlled increments. Responsible for the movement of the hands, each watch features a different type of escapement, but all ensure the consistent ticking of the watch.
Gasket
Gaskets are seals, usually made of rubber or silicone, that prevent water and dust from entering the watch case. Gaskets contribute to a timepiece’s water resistance level and are crucial for the likes of diving and sports watches, which depend on a high level of protection from water pressure.
Gear Train

Hands

Movement

Automatic movements are a type of mechanical movement that is self-winding, wound by the movement of the watch wearer. Alternatively, a quartz movement is battery-powered and is typically more reliable than a mechanical movement, accurate to half a second.
Rotor

External Parts of a Watch

Crown
The crown is the small knob on the side of the case that connects the user to the internal system of a timepiece. The crown is used to wind the watch, set the time and adjust other complications like the date.
Crystal
When you read the time from your timepiece, the transparent material you view through it is known as the crystal. Not only does the crystal allow you to tell the time, but it also protects the watch’s face, ensuring the dial, watch, and any internal complications are protected at all times from dust, debris, and damage. It can be made of a variety of materials, including acrylic, mineral glass, and sapphire, with sapphire being the most durable and scratch-resistant.
Strap or Bracelet
Coming in a variety of materials to suit different preferences, watch straps are essential for both functionality and style. Their primary function is to secure the watch to the wearer’s rist, ensuring it stays in position and fits comfortably. However, straps are also a major part of a timepiece’s appearance and have different features that make certain materials suited to different activities. Leather straps offer a classic, elegant look and are common for dress watches while metal bracelets are the most common type of strap, providing durability and a polished finish. Rubber or silicone straps are popular for sports and diving watches due to their water resistance and flexibility but NATO straps, a heavy-duty activity strap, made of nylon for the British Ministry of Defense.
